NCTV and Friends of Nevada County Libraries are putting on a telethon on Saturday, February 20th, from 3-9 pm, to benefit Nevada County libraries. It will air on Comcast channel 11, Suddenlink Channel 16, and live on NCTV. For more info, check out the Advocate.
As many of you know, the state and local governments are hurting for cash. Really hurting for cash. So much so that Nevada County has been kicking back and forth some pretty radical ideas concerning its libraries, which are seriously in the red. Amidst proposals calling for the closure of several libraries and numerous staffing cuts, County Executive Officer Haffey suggested contracting out library management to a private firm last October, which unleashed a hailstorm of protests.
Cognizant of the situation, community members gathered together to keep the libraries open and publicly-run, forming the Friends of Nevada County Libraries nonprofit organization to help raise funds for the county libraries. So far, it appears that community efforts are moving things in the right direction. As of last month, the Citizens Oversight Committee had recommended a plan that would keep all libraries open and still manage to reduce the budget deficit.
Regardless of which path the county takes, the libraries need help. Check out the Friends of Nevada County Libraries and tune in on the 20th. The goal of the telethon is to raise $100k.
